Keeping Hydrangeas Blooming! Trim them before the end of September!

Posted on 16th Sep 2009 @ 1:27 AM

People ask all the time why are my Hydrangeas green and leafy but no flowers?

1 of 4 answers is usually the culprit...

1. Too much SHADE

2. Too much Nitrogen

3. Too much or Too little water

4. Improper Pruning....!

Some species of Hydrangeas bloom on old growth from last year or two, while others can bloom on new stems from current growth.

You should prune in late September...removing weak and slow growth right down to the ground. Always keep several of the largest and healthiest woody stems 2' or more to allow new growth next year to emerge from these old wood stalks. This will keep you Hydrangeas looking BEAUTIFUL year after year!
